The Building of My Home and Studio Details

Julius Shulman, born in Brooklyn in 1910, has for decades been recognized as the pre-eminent photographer of mid-century architecture. Shulman's own home and adjoining studio in Hollywood's Laurel Canyon were designed in 1949 by Raphael Soriano, and serve as the subject of this gorgeous new artist s book. Shulman photographed the land he had purchased for his home in the early 1940s, as well as the construction which ensued. His set of master prints of this project, spiral-bound into an album, has been kept on his studio shelves for the past 60 years. We are now pleased to make available a limited edition facsimile of this important body of work, which provides insight into Shulman's early working methods, and his unique ability to capture not only the aesthetic, but also the emotional, intention of designs. The Building of My Home and Studio is limited to 1,000 copies, each housed in a transparent slipcase for protection.

Reviews

The reason I bought this book (besides my interest in modern architecture and it's photography) lies in the neighbouring property of the Shulman house. In 1968, that property was bought by Frank Zapppa and his wife, Gail Zappa. The house can be seen on a number of photographs in this book (and on the cover). It was built in 1939, but has been enlarged substantially by the Zappa's, starting in the 70's. In fact, the house as it is seen on the photographs in this book, is barely recognizable nowadays. Zappa built his own studio there: the UMRK (Utility Muffin Research Kitchen).
